Rich makes Short Work of Combs in Hometown Main Event
After a long time away from the cage, hometown favorite Sawyer "By God" Rich returned to VALOR where he took on 13 fight veteran Billy "Two Tone" Combs in the night's main event. The trash talk leading up to the fight was extensive and continued at the weigh-in when Combs missed weight by over ten pounds, yet Rich still accepted the fight at a new weight. Combs opened the fight against the favorite Rich with some hard kicks, but Rich eventually found himself on top of Combs landing many unanswered punches leading to a referee stoppage in the first round. Rich said post-fight that he was looking to fight again as soon as possible and October seems like the expected return date.
Steven Haag Wins Battle Against Chris Aguilar, Damir Chokes Out Martino
Besides Rich, a few other fighters ended their long stretches without fights including "Smooth" Steven Haag and Chris Aguilar. Both men entered the fight as top prospects returning from long layoffs knowing a big win could put them in line for a big fight. Haag's used some nasty inside leg kicks early on and took the back of Aguilar, but wasn't able to get a finish. Aguilar started to find his rhythm striking until Haag landed a nasty knee to the body leading to a TKO victory. Haag informed everyone post-fight that he'll be making his professional debut on September 12th in Blountville, TN at VALOR Fights 25. After some top level kickboxing experience, Knoxville's Damir Ferhatbegovic returned to MMA for the first time in nearly a year to battle former VALOR Lightweight Champion Nick Martino. Damir looked outstanding against the former champion as he landed some nice punches and was quick to counter the outstanding striker Martino. "The Bosnian Barncat" cut up Martino with some big punches and eventually took the back of Martino with only seconds left in the round. The warrior that is Nick Martino wouldn't tap with only six seconds remaining, but his body couldn't hold out that long resulting in Martino passing out due to a rear-naked choke and Damir taking home a technical submission victory.
McVay and DeAngelo Meet on Short Notice, Steal the Show
One of the top newcomers inside the VALOR cage has been the MMA-Institute's Ryan "All Day" McVay and he came to Crossville looking to remain undefeated. Little did he know he would be taking on another highly touted fighter in Knoxville's Dylan DeAngelo. After McVay's orginial opponent didn't have up to date bloodwork, both men agreed to the short notice battle just hours before the show. The fight was an absolute battle taking place mostly on the mat with McVay showing some new wrinkles in his game with his slick sweeps and submission defense. DeAngelo also showed some improvements since his last appearence in the cage chaining some very nice submissions together, but was unable to get the finish. In the end of the VALOR 24 Fight of the Night, McVay took home the split decision victory and earned a future title shot at 145, likely to come in his backyard in October in Chattanooga.
